Abstract:

Educational computer games have been around since the 1970s and are a steady staple of the game market. Many educational games focus on teaching language, mathematics, science and cognitive skills. However there is a lack of local educational games. Most educational games are imported from overseas and are situated in foreign contexts. There are also few computer games, which utilize fables and folklore to tell stories in the game, even less so locally. This paper explores the use of local fables in educational computer games to teach English among Year 2 students in an international school. Based on findings from a survey and interview with the students and their teacher, an educational game incorporating characteristics of fables and game design principles was designed. User perceptions obtained indicate that game design principles apply well even to educational and moralistic learning such as fables.
