Abstract:
In the gaming industry the creation of simulators is most often intended to provide entertainment. However, in creating a simulator for the research of the design of an artifact, where does gaming give way to the study of a hypothetical reality? Ethnography originated in the study of in-situ cultures and social groups, but recently has found favour in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). In the design of unique artifacts, a simulation environment maybe all that we can have available, so how can ethnography cope with this lack of substantive reality? This paper outlines this question in the context of research of theory related to the design of controls of driving a vehicle in high cognitive load environments (ie. Land speed record or driving an emergency vehicle through traffic).
Keywords: Component; Ethnography, simulation, driving.
