Abstract:

A high value RET plant Nardostachys grandiflora has been traditionally employed in treatment of a wide range of disorders including nervous system, digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, urinary system, reproductive system and skin disorders. Externally it is used in the form of paste. It is used in burning skin and effective in many skin disorders as paste. It improves the complexion and is antipyretic. Its fine powder is used in excessive sweating and reducing foul smell of sweat. WHO has recommended that traditional health and folk medicine systems are proved to be more effective in health problems worldwide N. grandiflora is certain to emerge in the near future as a major player in the growing field of herbal supplements and medicines both in daily self-care and in professionally managed health care system. The principal constituents of N. grandiflora are jatamansone, sesquiterpenoid, spirojatamol, patchouli alcohol, jatamol A and B, jatamansic acid, nardostachone, nardol and resin. All the parts of N. grandiflora are used as antiseptic, anticonvulsant, antispasmodic, antibacterial, antipyretic, antifungal, antidote, antiemetic, analgesic, anxiety and locally as “dhoop” in large scale. Despite the huge medicinal properties, religious importance and critically endangered status, still N. grandiflora could not received much attention regarding conservation and sustainable utilization, even limited studies done so far on development of propagation and regeneration protocols. Availability of planting materials and cultivation of species is still lacking. Due to rapid degradation in natural regeneration, limited numbers of pockets or individuals are presented in the nature throughout distribution range is a questioned of worry. Due to the significant importance as serving lifeline for the living being, the survival of herbs is in risk and therefore, the present article highlights the major causes of threats and conservation measures developed so far.
