Abstract:

Animal cells microencapsulation for immunoisolation of cells used as bioartificial organ such as microencapsulated islet of langerhanse for insulin dependent diabetic patients. In this study, a new microcapsule from gum tragacanth (GT) was introduced to microencapsulate cells and various modifications (preservatives and cross linking agents).

Microcapsules were characterized in terms of mechanical stability, protein diffusion, and surface properties. Biological response to these new beads was studied by encapsulation of red blood cell as an example. Hemoglobin release assay of the encapsulated RBC’s in various conditions shows that the combined preservative increased the maintainging effect of GT. Our results show that GT beads are capable of microencapsulating animal cells.
