Abstract:

Architects have designed splendid transport infrastructure buildings including terminals and stations, but have seemed overly uninterested in guideways despite them being an inevitable part of the built environment. Recently the relationship between infrastructure and architecture has gained importance in the design discipline. This paper aims to spatially conceptualize guideways by proposing motorways as city structures connecting different modes of transportation while housing various architectural facilities. As a case study, three utopic visionary projects are devised for roads, bridges and viaducts in Istanbul, the biggest city of Turkey.
