Abstract:
In the present study, the steel structural system strength property is investigated. By assuming that each member of a system is either perfectly brittle or perfectly plastic, the statistical behavior of systems is evaluated, and the effects of the coefficient of variation and the correlation coefficient of member strength are investigated. Correlated and uncorrelated member strength with the same mean are considered. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to evaluate the maximum strength and the residual strength of the system. It is found that the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of variation of the member strength are essential parameters for statistical assessment of maximum strength properties in a parallel steel structural system. In addition, increasing the number of system components affects the system strength and the system strength variability.
