Abstract:
This paper explores the relationship between the use of metaphoric language and ideas of truth production in the 2nd century CE Greek author Lucian of Samasota’s science fiction tale True Histories. In this work, the author uses familiar language in a fantastic setting (on the Moon) in order to expose the power of language as a determinative force. Language, in this case ancient Greek, is not only a tool for communication, but a constructive force, and Lucian’s playful application highlight the implications and dangers of misuse and miscommunication
