Abstract:
The question of what makes stories stories, or the difference between stories and nonstories, has been an ontological problem in narrative studies. Theorists’ attempts to define a story have generated more questions and diverse views on its characteristics and functions. This paper aims to provide a brief theoretical discussion of some key features from the narratological, cognitive and discourse analytic perspectives which have been used in the existing studies of stories and their narrativity. The paper concludes with a proposal for an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the nature of stories and specifying their varying degrees of narrativity.
