Abstract:
This study presents a historical socio-phonetic analysis of the reasons behind the re-introduction of /dˤ/ into Arabic after its merger with /ðˤ/. This historical socio-phonetic analysis argues that accent divergence was the main mechanism behind splitting the merger of /dˤ/ with /ðˤ/.
Keywords: Soci-phonetics, historical linguistics and sound merger
