Abstract:
Future directions for EHR systems can often be observed through standards development activities now. Though there are many directions that EHR systems can take in the future, this paper discusses 3: (1) the need for organizations to use EHR systems to help them create and maintain a legal health record, (2) the need to enhance usability for clinician use to increase patient safety, while reducing the data collection burden for clinicians, and (3) the need for interoperability between mobile apps and EHR systems. Issues and challenges are discussed. All 3 are strong directions for EHR systems to take in the future.
