Observational Study on Compliance to Hand Hygiene among Health Care Workers in KAUH

Abstract:
World Health Organization standardized hand hygiene practice to improve practices and reduce transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients, families and Health Care Workers (WHO, 2009).WHO further recommends for all health care workers(HCWs)to be vigilant regarding hand hygiene and mandates 100{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} compliance. The purpose of this study is to explore the hand hygiene compliance among HCWs in King Abdulaziz University Hospital. An observational cross-sectional research design with convenience sampling was conducted to observe HCWs using a modified instrument adopted from Institute for Healthcare improvement with integration of 5 moments of hand hygiene. The study commence with observation from various units among all categories of HCWs (n = 699), nurses 56{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (n=391), doctors 26{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (n= 182) and 18{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (n=126) of other categories. The compliance rate results showed in the moment 1 & 2 was 47{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (n=328). In moment 3, 55 out of 165 (33.3 {6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) complied with hand wash which were doctors 6 {6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (n=10), nurses 19.4{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} (n=32) and 7.9 {6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}(n=13) among other HCWs. In moment 4 and 5 were 74.2{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} compliance rate. Thus, there are needs to develop improvement plan by collaborating all the departments with support from KAUH administration to meet the 100{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} compliance rate as recommended by WHO.
