Abstract: The study investigates the influence of internal and external environment on the internationalization intention of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from emerging markets. Based on the unique data set of 500 Russian firms (as an example of emerging market) we found out that while international and domestic ventures perceive some factors in a similar way, their perception of industry conditions and internal environment differs: international ventures feel the more intensive competition pressure. At the same time they have several advantages compared to domestic firms: better access to capital and knowledge. Moreover, the factors of success for international SMEs can be characterized by proactive strategy and long-term orientation. Notably, the empirical evidence shows that international ventures perform better. The results of the study provide deep insight into factors that influence entrepreneurial motivation of Russian SMEs for internationalization.
