Abstract:
Violence against women is not a new or recent phenomenon. Women have been the victims of violence all through the age, in all societies, cultures regions or religious communities in the world. Violence against women and girls is a pervasive problem that is rooted in the male dominated systems of power and privilege. In national and international media, violence against women has been the lead topic. . This issue has not been addressed as the main theme over several years and is unlikely to be addressed again for another decade or more. In the last two decades violence against women, (gender-based violence) has emerged as the most pressing and intractable social problem across regional, social and cultural boundaries. Violence against women is recognized as a serious human rights violation and a pervasive public health problem that concerns all sectors of society. The sad fact is that the issue of violence against women would be an appropriate topic at any time, in any year. In part, this is because women still do not enjoy full political and human rights in many societies, and in part it is because we have too often allowed cultural norms and customs to serve as an excuse for violence against women. Nations must affirm that no cultural argument can ever justify violence against women. Violence against women and girls is a violation of human rights. It is very clearly a human rights issue and therefore has to be addressed from a human rights perspective. Gender-based violence remains a major health and human rights concern and no human development can be achieved fully as long as women and girls continue to suffer from violence or live in fear of it. Despite the ostensible acceptance of women being equal to men, and a plethora of laws and human rights guarantees, violence against women, which is also referred to as gender-based violence, is a reality that has assumed huge proportions.
