Privacy and Disclosure at Work: The Implications of Self-Concealment and Anonymity

Abstract:
This study investigated the association between disclosure related personality traits and anonymous messages in the workplace. Individuals must manage the tension between desire to disclose and desire for privacy, especially at work. Those prone to self-conceal have a heightened need for privacy and may be more likely to disclose information in anonymous computer-mediated contexts. Findings indicate that self-concealment was related to at least one type of anonymous communicative behavior. Implications and future research are explored.
