Abstract:
This study focuses on discovering the relationship between mainstream and alternative media in Taiwan. In early days, the relationship between these two media is reported from the view of Binarism. Recently, the concept of Hybridity has emerged which underlies that alternative media cannot be understood in isolation from the mainsream. As an emerging country, Taiwan, it is a common scenario that a person may have trouble to establishing public opinions through these two media channels. Now adays the issues related to agriculture environment are getting even more highlighted because of farmland grabbing from the government for industrial or commercial usage in Taiwan. And many news articles related to these kinds of social movements, which against governmental land grabbing, are made and reported from many respects of views. These problems are caused by the fundamental regulations which allow “Cottages Owned by Non-Farmers”. By the means of an exploratory empirical study, utilising qualitative research methods, this research analyzes the different kinds of content presentation in mainstream media and alternative media, as well as compares what and how the two media present issues related to cottages owned by non-farmers over time. The evidences show that mainstream media, comparing with alternative media, focuses on single event and specific aspect, also is more focus on the impacts in the near feature. The alternative media otherwise tries to discuss more topics from a long-term point view. Mainstream media and online citizen-based media, which represents for the alternative media in this research share complementary relationship to each other, and the emerging power from this Hybridity can drive public opinions to greater good.
