Abstract:
Fluorescence decay of the conjugate photobases of 1- naphthol-4-sulfonate and 2-naphthol-5-sulfonate has been studied in 1-propanol-water mixtures by a single-photon counting technique. The fluorescence decays are found to be bi-exponential. Both photobases demonstrate the need of one water molecule for their hydration. The position of the sulfonic group in 1-napthol-4-sulfonate provides better stability to its conjugate base compared to the photobase of 2 naphthol-5-sulfonate. The fluorescence decay of the conjugate base, nevertheless, depends only on the solvent structure.
