Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in adolescents’ goal characteristics across different ages. Using a survey, perceived goal characteristics and factors affecting the goal characteristics were examined. Over 700 Korean adolescents aged 12 to 28 participated in the survey, and they were placed into three groups such as early, middle, and late adolescence according to their ages. Major results showed that adolescent perceptions of the four characteristics of goal improved with ages. The effects of personal factors and social factors on the perceived goal characteristics differed by group. Both identity and direct experience were found to be significant factors on goal characteristics as adolescent age increase. Mean scores of the adolescents’ goal characteristics increased as comparable to their level of psychological development, and thus, developmental stages of adolescents need to be considered in identifying their goal characteristics. Issues regarding the development of goal pursuits will be discussed more in the presentation.
