Abstract:

Although the word “flexibility” as related to the field of dwellings has a very broad meaning, this concept has been (and still is) a source of extraordinary findings.
Unlike most of the traditional concepts, which have been ignoring the need for future changes, flexibility in the dwelling field has opened a wide range of possibilities as to how to face the volatility of contemporary life-style and to create a sort of life-time dwelling, in which any changes could be predicted in advance. If previously determined and fixed, dwellings and functional units inside interior spaces may become variable, movable and expandable. This transformation has allowed a significant improvement: it has prevented the “obsolescence” of the space.
The following paper reviews the methods initially employed for this fusion process by using residential buildings, interiors, furniture and traveling vehicles concepts. The present analysis covers the period from the beginnings of the 20th century, highlighting the developments occurred in the field of industrialization, to the end of the 1960’s, when Archigram was about to launch a dramatic change in the interpretation of living.
