Abstract:
There is a general notion among public that the interaction amongst residents in any apartment is very poor compared to that of a housing colony. To tackle this problem and/or to attract more people into apartment living, some developers are designing and building new type of apartments known as ‘community living apartments’. A pilot study was conducted to find out if there is a feeling amongst common people that, there is a ‘lack of’ or ‘low’ interaction among the inmates of any apartment, the results of which indeed confirmed the notion. This paper looks deeper into this problem and tries to find solutions for this problem from an architects’ point of view.
This paper tries to find out:
1. Does the so called ‘community living apartment’ solve the problem of lack of interaction among residents of an apartment.
2. Identify the elements in ‘community living apartment’ that enhances the interaction among its residents.
Case studies were conducted to find out whether the interaction in the so-called ‘community living’ apartment is more than that of an ordinary apartment and if so, what are the factors that contributed to this. For this study two so called ‘community living apartments’ and two conventional apartments were chosen. Studies were conducted through observation and surveys. The results were analyzed and the factors that contribute to interaction were identified and are listed out here.
