Abstract:
The rapid rate of urbanisation and increase in population in the world has led to a need for residential and ancillary facilities in all core urban areas, especially in the developing nations. As a result, the development is shifting towards the urban fringes and the peripheral areas are becoming a part of the greater urban agglomeration. Technological advancement and greater connectivity has brought the peripheral areas closer to the core urban area. This is resulting in the transformation of the original character of these areas due to rise in real estate prices and changes in the mindset of the developers and financers. The effect has been felt on the demography and land use, neighbourhood identities, local economy, social elements as well as the environment. The speculation of such development usually leads to indiscriminate construction of buildings close to the transit corridors. Due to the lack of planning regulations and urban design guidelines, this uncontrolled growth can be detrimental. The impact study can reveal effects of such proposed or ongoing transit systems in the changing character of the urban periphery. The paper aims to study the role of mass rapid transit system in facilitating the urban development in the peripheral areas of a city.
