Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine the morphological variants of the human spleen in cadaveric specimens.
Methods: The present study included 45 adult human spleens which were obtained from the gross anatomy laboratory of our institution. All the spleens have been embalmed with 10{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} formalin and stored in a formalin container for the past few years. The morphology of the spleens was macroscopically observed for their different shapes, surfaces, notches and the variants like the splenic fissures were noted. The length, breadth and thicknesses of the spleen were measured using the digital Vernier caliper and the measuring tape.
Results: Among our specimens, 30 spleens (66.7{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) exhibited notches and these notches were absent in 15 (33.3{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) specimens. The notches were observed in the superior border of the spleen and their numbers varied from 1 up to 5. The variant notches were observed in the inferior border in 8 (17.8{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) of our specimens. The fissures on the diaphragmatic surface were observed in 5 spleens (11.1{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). The length of the spleen in our specimens ranged from 8 to 23 cms, breadth ranged from 5.6 to 16 cms and the thickness was ranging from 1.1 to 6.7 cms. The average length, width and thickness of the spleens in the present study were 13.7 cms, 9.1 cms and 3.6 cms respectively.
Conclusion: The knowledge of the anatomical variants of the spleen is of fundamental importance to the clinician. The spleen is most likely to be enlarged if the splenic notches are clinically palpable. We believe that the present study has provided morphological details of the spleen which are important to the surgeons while they perform surgical procedures related to the spleen. The details are essential to the radiologists for their diagnostic procedures.
