Abstract:
maintaining data security is one of the main challenges that many government agencies face around the world. While they do attempt and implement end-point security strategies, they do sometimes lack the capability to provide a full-fledged and reasonably secure electronic reporting portal that is capable of protecting online public business information. There is always the threat of unauthorized information usage, data leakage, and network disruptions that could originate from outside the government agency itself or from within. Companies House (CH), a leading government agency in U.K., is responsible for receiving and disclosing basic corporate information of small businesses. An in-depth investigation is carried out onto (i) data security threats faced by CH on its website and (ii) its attempts to mitigate the risks associated with them. This study is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the specific data security problems faced by government regulatory agencies that are immensely involved in data disclosure and dissemination activities. This could help many decision and policy makers in visualizing such potential problems when devising strategies for building electronic filing portals. They also could benefit from the British agency’s successful attempts in overcoming data security threats using alternative methods.
