Abstract:

Cambodia has the potential to be an important rice exporting country of south-east Asia. Adoption of improved rice technologies can boost total production and actual exports. Currently, the adoption of improved high yielding rice varieties is limited mainly to irrigated areas with farmers using traditional rice varieties in the bulk of rainfed areas. This paper analyzes the determinants of adoption of improved rice varieties by farmers based on a household survey conducted in 2010 and draws implications for promoting the spread of improved varieties for generating larger amount of exportable surplus. The results indicated that farm size, land type and market access are the main determinants of the adoption level.
