Abstract:

Connectivity of pedestrian space plays a vitally important role in people’s daily life. It raises a question of whether the characteristics of connectivity for pedestrian space are various in different countries. The purpose of this research is to study the pedestrian space diversities in various countries through analysis on the connectivity in pedestrian space by an analytical method based on cellular automata (CA). Firstly, features of pedestrian space are clarified. Accordingly, the method of CA is identified to apply to connectivity analysis according to their characteristics. Secondly, an analytical method is proposed by a combination of the method of CA, the algorithm of Fowler and Little, and the impacting analysis of transportation. Thirdly, the simulations of connectivity in various pedestrian spaces from China and Japan are presented. Lastly, the comparative analysis is demonstrated and the characteristics of connectivity in pedestrian space are refined. As a result, this study provides the usability and rationality of the method. Furthermore, it shows off influencing factors on the connectivity of pedestrian space.
