Abstract:
The current urban conglomerations in developed, and more importantly developing, countries are increasingly being seen as hubs of pollution, outrageous resource consumption and unhealthy environments. This paper tries to deal with the goals of sustainability by way of experimenting with materials, structure and the rigid social constructs governing sacred places to suggest an innovative architectural design that hopes to mark an iconic landmark in a vibrant metropolitan city of India. A multi-faith spiritual center is proposed in Kolkata with novel use of steel and rammed earth, adaptive elements and subterranean spaces.
