Abstract:
Since the early nineties, Kochi has seen a very rapid urbanization which can be due to exponential influx of population from different region in search of opportunity. The city though, has not been able to expand at this pace due to the space constraints. This has led to congestion and more time in commuting. Kochi as a city has been without a proper and efficient mass public transport system. The system though grown in number, has become competitive and more unsafe. The objective of this work is to develop design strategies that would help reduce public transport related problems of an expanding city using Transit Oriented Development which can be achieved by integrating the mass public transport network, optimizing land use efficiently and creating or recovering the adjacent urban spaces.
