Abstract:

For utilizing the solid waste materials in civil engineering construction, various attempts have been made based on their feasibility and performance. In this study, a comparative approach is followed to evaluate the performance of human hair fibers and coir fibers in the process of soil stabilization in place of conventional commercial synthetic fibers and the suitability of these reinforcing materials is studied. The results indicate that the shear strength, modulus of soil reinforced with natural fibers has increased considerably, but the permeability value has increased with the addition of fibers. The shrinkage/swell potential of the soil has reduced with reinforcement. It is found that the natural fibers could show considerable improvement in soil properties, similar to synthetic fibers, therefore the natural fibers can be effectively used in improving the soil properties.
