Abstract:

There is obviously a possibility of integrating architectural space (building interior) and urban open space (urban interior) as a single concept. Architecture means to connect building interior and urban interior. It can be understood by the articulation formed by the rapports and the resonances between different and heterogeneous entities. Simultaneously, its form is made between the past, the present, and the future. It is thus a revelation about the form of space and the shape of time. Architecture has a twofold form that it connects inside with outside as a physical connection, and the past with the present and the future as a nonphysical connection. Continuity is one of architectural principles. This paper explores, through the review of selective literatures, the continuities of form between spaces and times. The first site it explores is the continuum of space that building rooms are connected to urban rooms. The second site it investigates is perception and experience. Architecture can be understood in two features of: the continuity of the matter-forms perceived by the senses and the continuum of the spatial forms experienced by the sequential movements. The third site it deals with is the continuity in the shape of time. Architecture exposes the continued form imprinted by the course of history or its discontinuity. Theoretically discussing the continuities of form, the paper offers a significant design method to architecture.
