Abstract:
This study is aimed at developing a well-integrated model to determine the capacity of signalized intersections. The capacity of a signalized intersection is expressed as a performance measure for the intersection and it always involves many empirical factors both directly and indirectly. In order to propose a simplest model which concerns only on left turning movements, this research is motivated to integrate the isolated left turning saturation flow into the capacity estimation model. Three different types of left turn protections are identified at different signalized intersections in California, USA. The overall objective is to develop the mathematical model and then to validate the developed model by using real traffic data at different levels of congestions by performing simulation technique.
