Abstract:

This paper presents an efficient three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) modeling approach using absorbing regions for guided wave (GW) propagation and scattering at defects in laminated composite beams. The objective of this paper is to provide a practical technique of modeling GW propagation in infinitely long structures using commercial FE packages, which provides an efficient simulation tool for studying the GW scattering characteristics and damage detection problems. The configuration of the absorbing regions, which minimizes the wave reflection from boundaries, is determined in the study. The model is then applied to study the GW scattering characteristics at different types and sizes of defects in laminated composite beams.
