Abstract:

In the recent decades, the flat slab system was commonly used in buildings because of its architectural flexibility and ease of construction. Punching shear-failure of slab-column connection is one of the common failure modes of this system. This type of failure is catastrophic because it is a brittle and sudden one. Large number of studies was carried out in the last few decades aiming to prevent such failure and to investigate different strategies for enhancing the slab's resistance against this mode of failure. This research work aims to investigate the effectiveness of enhancing the slab's punching shear capacity using internal prestressing. A numerical analysis using the wellknown FE software, ANSYS, is used to carry out a parametric study to assess the effectiveness of this technique and to reveal the key parameters which affect the ultimate punching shear capacity when internal prestressing technique is used.
