Abstract:
The main objective of this paper is to develop a flood hazard map for Adyar watershed in Chennai as it forms the basic tool for flood preparedness and mitigation activities, including flood insurance programs. Appropriate flood management strategies should be developed in order to set up an environment that fosters sustainable development. The Adyar watershed is delineated into micro watersheds based on Digital Elevation Model and stream flow data in Arcview platform. Then, various thematic maps like slope, gradient, drainage density, size of watershed, rainfall, soil, land use, communication line and infrastructure are prepared and overlaid to produce the flood hazard map. This flood hazard map would help the administrators and planners to identify the risk areas and to prioritize their mitigation efforts. This would also help the public in raising the awareness of flood risks and to plan their mitigation activities.
