Abstract:

The participation of financial institutions is crucial to foster sustainable development as this sector is, in one way or another, behind virtually all the investment that is made in infrastructure building. This is particularly true in the Brazilian case, where major financial institutions are owned by the federal government, meaning that any moves made by these entities reflect public policies strategies. In the last few years, initiatives adopted by two of Brazilian biggest banks have had success in encouraging green building in the country. This paper aims to demonstrate the results obtained so far by one of CAIXA’s policies for the housing market and also by BNDES’ programs designed to finance stadiums and hotels built for FIFA World Cup 2014 ™.
