Abstract:

Though murrum soils have been traditionally used since long time for road construction, in the recent years, there is a growing concern over their plasticity in the light of stringent specifications laid down for their use. Murrums from many borrow areas suffer from excessive plasticity, making them soft during monsoon which in turn make them ineffective to bind the aggregate. The present work is focussed to control the excessive plasticity characteristics of murrums by admixing with them the lime and cement individually. Among these additives tried, cement is found to be superior to lime both in terms of plasticity control and gain in CBR values.
