Abstract:

With the advent of BIM and IPD, it is an appropriate time to reexamine the idea of integration. What is integration? While the word is used often, its meaning is vague and broad. Is it even possible to define? This paper seeks to evaluate the term structural integration as well bring meaning to it. By limiting the scope of what is integrated, a more precise discussion can occur of the relationship between these two fields. Using a combination of existing literature and interviews with contemporary practitioners, this paper will examine existing integration models and the viewpoints of current architects and engineers on the subject. Various components of structural integration will be
categorized from both the architectural and structural points of view to bring more definition to the term.
