Abstract:
The city of Irbid has been characterized by rapid growth as a result of political and social developments related to the region events. This rapid growth has not been accompanied by adequate development of infrastructure, with no appropriate development plans or an efficient public services network. In recent years, the vision for development in Irbid has involved a fragmented approach, with interventions failing to take into account the fact that the city has arrived to a critical situation. This approach was the result in systematic deterioration of existing buildings in general, and systematic damage of public services, particularly. One example of the latter is the risk of public health posed by an inadequate drainage system. Other example is the transformation of the city into a large informal market, in addition to the continuous change of building use. This led to transform the center of the city from a dynamic and vital area into lacking of any balance between residential and commercial buildings and services. Today, Irbid requires more than just rehabilitation, the purpose of this paper is to emphasize the need for interventions in the main infrastructure (public transportation, sewerage system, and electrical network) to transform the city from a temporary and informal city into a modern and functional one.
