Abstract:
Warm Mix (WM) technology employs considerably lower temperatures as compared to the commonly used hot mix technology. It has numerous advantages like being environment friendly, less oxidative hardening of bitumen, greater hauling distance, etc. Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is a gap-graded, rutresistant asphalt mix that gives a high skid and rut resistance, and a harder riding surface. This paper presents a mix design study for SMA using warm mix technology. Materials are tested for their desirable engineering properties for use in pavement construction. The aggregate gradation for the design mix was chosen as per the Indian standard codes. Marshall method of mix-design was employed. The results were compared with the standard mix specifications for SMA and found satisfactory. The optimum binder content was found to be in line with the required specifications and suitable for heavy volume.
