Abstract:

This paper aims to examine the impact of firm specific characteristics on voluntary disclosure level in Palestine based on information in the annual reports of non-financial firms listed on the Palestinian Stock Exchange
for the available financial years 2006 and 2007. Our findings suggest that firm specific characteristics play a vital role in determining voluntary disclosure level in Palestine. Except profit margin and return on equity, it is found that firm specific characteristics tested in this study, have a significant contribution in providing voluntary disclosure. This study contributes to the literature by providing insights to the firm-specific factors that explain voluntary disclosure by companies operating in the small Palestinian stock market of a country where there is a historical absence of political and economic stability. The findings of this study have important implications for authority regulators, policy makers, shareholders and other users of annual reports who will be better able to understand the factors that explain the voluntary disclosure by firms and use this in developing future recommendations.
