Abstract:

Erythritolisafour-carbon sugar alcohol, used as sucrose substitute. It is commercially produced only in biotechnological processes. The aim of this investigation was to compare yield and dynamics of erythritol production from glycerolbyY.lipolyticaWratislaviaK1-UV21 strain in batch, fed-batch, and repeated-batch processes. The cultivations were performed in Biostat BPlusbio reactor. The total concentration of glycerol was 150 and 250g/Linbatchand fed-batch culture, respectively. The repeated-batch culture was started as a fed-batch cultivation and next, after glycerol depletion, from the bioreactor 0.8L of the culture broth was taken and exchanged with the same volume of fresh medium containing 100g/L of glycerol. This procedure was repeated four times. In the batch and fed-batch cultures yeast produced 84.1 and 136.0g/Loferythritol. The production yield was similar in both processes, however the productivity and specific production rate was higher in batch culture. In repeated batch culture higher ythritolproductionyield(0.51–0.55g/L)anddynamicsofthebiosynthesis(0.8–1.05g/Lh) was observed during first three cycles.
