Abstract:
Carotenoids, yellow or red coloured compounds which are tetraterpenes, also known as lipochromes or chromolipids, a fat soluble pigment present widely in micro organisms, plants and animals. Carotenoids are being used in food industry as food coloration, including antioxidant and anticancer. Recently carotenoids are being extracted from microorganisms. Streptomyces sp. is one of the micro-organism that has been proven to produce various carotenoids. Streptomyces, based on the carbon source utilization, produced different carotenoid pigments which result in the changes of colour in the substrate and Ariel mycelia. Carotenoids have been extracted employing solvent extraction procedure. Thin layer chromatography was used to analyze the sample for various compounds present in the extract. Then the extract was subjected to column chromatography and elution was done using different solvent systems to fractionate the crude sample. Further purification, to obtain a single fraction was achieved by using repeated column chromatography and preparative thin layer chromatography. This single compound was characterized with the help of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, FT-IR Spectroscopy and ultraviolet- visible (UV-VIS) spectrum.
