Abstract: Certain wastes from metallurgical industries such as pickling liquor from steel industry and copper tailings from copper ore refineries are characterized as hazardous wastes according to Environmental Protection Act (EPA) and Hazardous Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989. The possibility of utilizing industrial wastes such as copper tailings and pickling sludge was explored. The copper tailings and the sludge generated by spent pickling liquor treated with Calcium hydroxide were used as fertilizing agents. The results showed that the samples with copper tailings confer complemented plant growth whereas pickling sludge caused less growth. A combination of the copper tailing and pickling sludge was also found to have the potential to be used as a fertilizer.
