Abstract:  This paper provides a situational analysis of the Australian University system and argues that it is a crisis in potentio. The following significant threats are examined: the ageing academic workforce, massive open online courses (MOOCs), a culture of managerialism and a "user pays" philosophy.

The author asserts that the university system is in danger of becoming divided along class lines and that some universities will struggle to survive over the next 20 years. It is concluded that governments need to become more involved in policy and planning rather than relying on market forces for surrogate governance.

Keywords: Strategic analysis, MOOCs, strategic HRM, educational policy, managerialism, academic standards.
