Abstract: The innovation of Polish economy is on a relatively low level. In the latest report entitled Innovation Union Scoreboard (including only the European Union countries), InnoMetrics placed Polish economy in terms of innovation on the 22nd position among 27 examined countries. The low level of innovativeness of Polish economy may have negative consequences associated with a reduction of competitiveness of the economy and marginalize its importance in the international arena. Nonetheless, such poor level of innovation of the Polish economy should raise questions concerning the reasons for such a state of affairs. Particularly, owing to the fact that in the overall evaluation, the Polish economy, described by the main economic indexes, as compared to the economies of European Union countries looks well. In addition, Poland, in a general evaluation, has a number of features that could indicate a high innovative potential. Such features include: high education index and the ability to generate, adopt and diffuse knowledge, high work efficiency or a good and constantly improving information and communication infrastructure. Additional, it should be noted that in recent years (since Polish accession to the European Union) to support the Polish economy spent hundreds of millions of euros from the European Structural Funds. Compared to these data, the generally low innovation of the Polish economy forces to conduct in-depth research designed to attempt to explain such state of affairs. The purpose of this article is an attempt to evaluate the reasons for the low innovation of Polish SME companies.
