Abstract:
Take-the-best (TTB) is a decision heuristic that has gathered much research attention lately. One crucial assumption made by TTB is that only the binary values of cues are being used for making decisions. When continuous cues are encountered, however, it is unclear how to convert those cues into binary ones. In this study, we first analyzed the relations among several popular cue measures used in TTB with existing techniques and measures from the signal detection theory. Based on results from these analyses, we then explored dichotomization methods that could help a TTB user achieve four different optimization goals. One simple method, dichotomizing a continuous cue at its median, turned out to be the general answer.
