Abstract:

Objective: To identify patient admission characteristics associated with completion of long-term residential treatment for a substance use disorder (SUD) among adolescent women. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 117 adolescent women who entered a long-term residential SUD treatment program was conducted. Admission characteristics were compared between completers and non-completers. Logistic regression model was constructed to identify admission characteristics associated with completion of treatment. Results: The mean age was 16.7 years and 99 (84.6{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) participants were White. Of these 117 adolescent women, 53 (45.3{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) completed most treatment goals with a mean treatment duration of 227.85 days. Admission characteristics associated with completion of treatment were high educational attainment of a minimum of the 9th grade level (P = 0.014) and the use of opiates (P = 0.007), whereas sedatives/hypnotics use was associate non-completion of treatment (P = 0.002). Conclusions: Entering the treatment with withdrawal symptoms from sedative use might result in early discharge. The severity of opioid addiction might motivate adolescents to stay in treatment. Our hypothesis that a history of physical and/or sexual abuse was associated with non-completion of treatment was not confirmed. This suggests that gender differences might determine whether an abuse history predicts non-completion of treatment as it has been shown in adolescent men previously. Interventions to promote treatment completion among adolescents with SUD and the above mentioned admission characteristics are needed.
