Abstract: The aim of this paper is to determine the effect of Piaget’s cognitive development theory as applied in computer-based mind mapping strategy with popular music in relation to the students’ academic Performance in reading comprehension skills. The researchers made an innovative strategy about computer-based mind mapping strategy by integrating the theory of Jean Piaget’s cognitive development theory. The said digital mind mapping strategy is also integrated with the popular music which is the most requested song of college students nowadays. In fact, students to this age of information technology are very excited and interested of studying while listening to popular music because their minds become active. Hence, this paper is focused on the innovative teaching strategy with the use of popular music in computer-based mind mapping while Piaget’s cognitive development theory is the main theme in psychological aspect of education in teaching the college students.
The respondents of the study were the college students who are taking Education. They were chosen as the respondents because being future teachers, they must also be trained to use innovative techniques of teaching that will suit to the types of learners. Teachers should be resourceful and innovative in teaching in order to be effective in the teaching profession. Effective teaching does not involve presenting your exciting lessons or activities to the class, it is a craft learned over time. Effective teaching is a teaching philosophy that can distinctly change given the situation.
Moreover, college education students should also be equipped with reading comprehension skills which are very important in learning the lessons across disciplines. All subject areas need reading comprehension skills to fully understand the content of the lessons. Hence, teachers should develop cognition in discussing the lessons to their children. In fact, teachers are the great instruments of transmitting their knowledge and skills to their children. But, how could they transfer their knowledge to their children, if they do not have reading comprehension skills. Indeed, reading comprehension skills, the same as cognitive development of the minds. Thus, this paper, focused on Jean Piaget’s cognitive development as the main theory used in making the computer-based mind mapping strategy in teaching the education students who will be the future teachers. Eggen, P &Kauchak, D (2010), stated that use meaningful and authentic tasks when organizing themes for your instruction .Use computers to support skills and strategies for the learner by using expert peers or collaborative partners (Snowman 2009). Use computers to link learners to more knowledgeable peers experts thus fostering the master-novice apprenticeship and allowing scaffolding for the students learning Snowman 2009).
Certainly, in this 21st century, integration of information technology helps develops the cognition or comprehension skills of the students considering also their multiple intelligences. That is why, the paper focused on Jean Piaget’s cognitive theory as applied in computer- based mind mapping strategy with popular music as background, in analyzing the reading comprehension skills of the education college students who are the future teachers.
Furthermore, the researchers used experimental design with two groups of respondents, the experimental and control group. In the experimental group of students, teachers were using the innovative computer-based mind mapping strategy in teaching the students’ reading comprehension skills. In the control group of respondents, the teachers were using the lecture method of teaching without using ICT integration but still integrating the Jean Piaget’s theory in cognitive development. The findings revealed that the experimental group who were exposed to innovative computer-based mind mapping strategy with the use of popular music performed better in their academic performance in reading comprehension skills compared to the controll group of respondents who only used lecture method approach.
