Abstract:
Even though much is known about the negative consequences of materialistic values and especially their detrimental effects on well being, few studies have explored factors that may protect individuals from the negative consequences of materialism. The current study has identified psychological resources that act counter to materialistic values. Data were collected from 230 participants on measures of materialism, well-being and theoretically relevant moderators (gratitude and mindfulness). Results indicated that mindfulness and gratitude could shield individuals from the counterproductive pursuit of materialistic values. The relationship between materialism and well-being is discussed from a self-determination perspective. Gratitude and mindfulness are proposed as potential levers that can help to mitigate the negative effects of materialism on well-being.
