Abstract: Sense of agency is an experience of being in control of own actions which includes a feeling of correspondence between the intention and the action and the attribution of sensory outcome of the action to self. Sense of oculomotor agency is a particular case of the sense of agency which is experienced over own gaze in gaze-controlled interfaces. Following the intentional eye movements, the change in the interface, in the case of oculomotor agency, is attributed to self. Research has shown that in paradigms involving hand movement (e.g., key press, mouse movement) and subsequent visual or auditory event, sense of agency decreases when the delay between the action and its causal outcome increases. Despite such delay-dependent decrease in the sense of agency, certain delays can be tolerated without affecting the sense of agency. The present study intended to investigate the temporal delays that can be tolerated in the case of oculomotor agency and determine the effect of conscious perception of the delay on oculomotor agency. Twenty six participants took part in the study. The results of regression analyses showed that oculomotor agency decreased as the delay between the gaze-action and its causal outcome increased and that the temporal tolerance in oculomotor agency is relatively wide. Additionally, ANOVA showed that perception of the delay between the gaze-action and its causal outcome was associated with decrease in oculomotor agency and was, to some extent, dependent on display duration. The discussion presents the comparison between temporal effects in agency for hand-based action and oculomotor agency.
