Abstract: Since the Chinese government proposed the establishment of “Silk Road Economic Belt” and “Maritime Silk Road” in September and October, 2013, many scholars in various fields have conducted lots of researches from different angles. Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, which is the highest-level forum since it’s launched, was held in Beijing on May 14, 2017. The highest-level delegation of America was present at the forum, which shown the positive response since the initiative was put forward. As the most powerful discourse power, the news reports of American mainstream media and ideology hidden behind the discourse have strong international influence. Therefore, the current research selects the recent news report from the American mainstream media to make an analysis from the perspective of Critical Discourse
Analysis.
The research adopts Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Model as its theoretical framework and combines with some analytical tools proposed in Halliday’s Systemic-functional Grammar to reveal the discourse features and the hidden ideology so as to explore the image of Belt and Road Initiative constructed by American mainstream media. The article will be elaborated at three stages: description, interpretation and explanation. At description stage, the lexical classification, transitivity and modality are analyzed; as for interpretation, the article selects intertextuality including reporting mode and news as the analysis tool; at the stage of explanation, institutional context and social-cultural context are interpreted to reveal the hidden ideology in the news reports.
The research has found that skeptical and apprehensive attitude still can be manifested in the news reports, although the standpoint of America has converted from hostile to positive and approved towards this globally significant initiative. Therefore, the research reminds readers that dialectical thinking is essential in seeing through intricate accounts and get hold of what is going on in reality. What’s more, the research intends to arouse more attention to conduct analysis on Belt and Road Initiative in this field so that the application of Critical Discourse Analysis can be enriched.
