Abstract: The odor perception of perfumes is claimed to be associated with gender. In the present study, 18 participants scaled masculinity and femininity, and gender categorized 12 perfumes. The gender associations when sniffing perfumes were analyzed, in order to examine the characteristics of these gender associations, and how the perceived gender associations correspond to existing commercial gender categorizations of the 12 perfumes. The results show that the participants’ gender associations of the perfumes constitute a gender diversity scale based on the perfumes’ odor qualities, rather than one feminine group and one masculine group of perfumes.
